Since our chat together I have spent time with the painting and completed it. I guess you could say in acknowledgement of the process of the paintings creation and how it should be viewed I thought I’d use the concept of spending time with it in the title. Some contemplation of a painting gives the viewer time to discern the nuances of the work. I recommend it.

Remembering Tracey’s Place in the Kanimbla

There’s something magnificent about being in the Kanimbla at Tracey’s place. The escarpments surrounding the area, the way the light changes the colours and somehow they become more intense and then at other times soften and create such harmonies, to be able to be quiet with time to simply sit and observe, the birds the grasses the variations in the foliage. We saw a rainbow through the trees beside the house. Who would have thought! Wonderful.

I went into Sydney to meet a good friend – @christine.druitt – to check out exhibitions at @artgalleryofnsw and delighted to catch part of the Biennale of Sydney there.

Went into Sydney to meet up with a friend I trained with as an art teacher many years ago. The advantages of such a long term friendship is we are very relaxed with each other, both love art and discussing it and enjoy each other’s company which makes for a very pleasant day. Walking In

I put a blank canvas on the painting wall. Given how I’m feeling and what colours inspire me for the day I start. I pick the brushes up and find the colours that suit my mood, mix paint and make a mark on the canvas.

Start with one colour. Add another. Lighten it, darken it, put in variations of hue, maybe a contrast. Consider mark direction, shapes and their sizes, the layering. And continue till it all sits comfortably together. And when the elements complement and sit easy with the whole it rests easy with itself.

I call my process of painting my conversation I have with the canvas. The conversation continues until the total weight of the colours shapes weight direction is balanced and satisfying, the movement within the painting is somewhat contained, and the eye is suitably entertained.

And then it’s presented to the world.

I had an idea to do a series of images. I tried with this painting. I was curious how my painting would develop as I paint by process. So I did a series of images as it progressed. True! I forgot to take the initial stages but what I have gives an idea of my thinking. As a young boy of 7 when asked how do you paint? He replied- I think and think and think and then I paint the think. This is my ‘think’.

I’ve called it:
The Distance Between
It’s 140cm x 240cm
I used acrylic paint and charcoal

Take 2 canvases each 140cm x 120cm, put them side by side and sit and wonder at them in the studio space. It was quite a meditative process.

Give yourself time to think of all the possibilities looking at the blank canvases and visualise what that painting could look like.

And then paint the concept you imagined. Take delight in creating it. The energy used in its execution revealed in the mark making, the consideration in moving the eye just enough so you’re not ‘stuck’ at any particular point but rather moves around the work even if you don’t know how and keeping the palette limited with the zap of a yellow contrast to tantalise the eye.

Maybe my joy in creating the painting is evident to the viewer. I hope so.

I sometimes get to mind Jade for the day. She unfortunately is relegated to outside the house as inside is Leo the cat’s territory. And he’s not good at sharing space. Jade remains oblivious to Leo’s desire to keep all foreign bodies out of his home and Jade is ok with the pergola beside the living area where Leo patrols and Jade ignores him. But the studio is neutral and if I’m outside will lead me to the studio so I can work and she can recline. We both enjoy the space but when painting and Jade is in residence my approach to painting is a little less direct and more convoluted. It’s a hard job being a casual #studiodog for #ruthlecheminant. Gotta love a #greyhound laid back and chilled. …

Dancing Through Space and Time

I realised as I was working on the painting it felt like it needed to float and to that end I layered the work with different tones of colour, and painted over colours to allow the colour below be still evident. It’s a painting that took quite a bit of contemplation. I hope your eye is held and you can enjoy travelling through space and time with it as well.

It was on reflection a wonderful quiet Christmas holiday period.

I started this painting before Christmas and after at times during the holiday period. After the initial rush of creativity, I would wander into the studio, do a bit more, sit with and contemplate it. Finally I thought maybe👌. Sometimes painting can be a delightful meditative process I really relish. This painting There Can Be Order Out of Chaos was one of them.

I set it aside for a period of time to do the “acid” test of “what do I reckon of it now!” Is it ok or….. the answer dictates whether I leave it alone or keep the process going. I left it alone. Here it is. Not a fanfare more a quiet interlude.

Really enjoy our chooks. To make it more equitable and all the chooks have access rather than the top chook dominating the situation, I hang the weeds/fruit in a central position on a wire. They are very good at involving themselves in the installation…only while there is something to gain from it! #chooks #chooksofthebluemts #birds #backyardpoultry #entertainment …
